Examples from Taylor polynomials
All examples from Taylor polynomials.
[EXAMPLE]The derivatives at zero alternate between 0,1,0,−1. The odd-degree polynomial is
P2m+1(x)=k=0∑m(−1)k(2k+1)!x2k+1=x−3!x3+5!x5−⋯+(−1)m(2m+1)!x2m+1.
[EXAMPLE]The derivatives cycle as
cosx,−sinx,−cosx,sinx,cosx,…At zero, the odd derivatives vanish. Therefore
P6(x)=1−2!x2+4!x4−6!x6.Only even powers occur, as expected for the even function cosx.
[EXAMPLE]Let h=x−π/4. Since
cos4π=sin4π=22,the degree-three Taylor polynomial is
P3(x)=22−22h−42h2+122h3=22(1−h−2h2+6h3).The coefficient rule is unchanged from the Maclaurin case; only the displacement changes
from x to x−π/4.
[EXAMPLE]For ex, every derivative is ex, so every derivative at zero is 1:
Pn(x)=k=0∑nk!xk=1+x+2!x2+⋯+n!xn.For ln(1+x) and k≥1,
dxkdkln(1+x)x=0=(−1)k+1(k−1)!,so
Pn(x)=k=1∑n(−1)k+1kxk=x−2x2+3x3−⋯+(−1)n+1nxn.Replacing x by −x gives the finite expansion
−x−2x2−3x3−⋯−nxnfor ln(1−x).
