Translate a rate law

Build a first-order model by translating the verbal rate law:

  • proportional change gives P′=kPP'=kP;
  • relaxation towards a target gives T′=−k(T−A)T'=-k(T-A), with k>0k>0 for decay toward the target;
  • conservation gives rate of change=inflow−outflow.\text{rate of change}=\text{inflow}-\text{outflow}.

Use initial or measured data to determine the constants, then interpret the resulting solution on the physical interval where the model is valid.

The differential equation describes the local rate, while the data and parameters describe the particular system. Proportional growth is exponential, while relaxation approaches its target. Depending on the law, the translation can lead to a separable equation, a first-order linear equation or a logistic equation below.
