Reduction formula

A reduction formula expresses an integral InI_n in terms of In−kI_{n-k} for a smaller index, typically by integration by parts.

Here and below, power indices are non-negative integers. The step kk is 11 for xnexx^n e^x. For trigonometric powers it is 22, because sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x=1\sin^2 x+\cos^2 x=1 or sec⁡2x=1+tan⁡2x\sec^2 x=1+\tan^2 x returns a copy of InI_n that is then collected.
