Rational function

A function ff is a rational function if it is of the form f(x)=P(x)Q(x)f(x)=\frac{P(x)}{Q(x)}, where PP and QQ are polynomials and QQ is not the zero polynomial. Its real domain excludes the zeros of QQ.

Proper rational function

A rational function ff is proper if deg⁡P<deg⁡Q\deg P<\deg Q. If ff is not proper, long division writes it as a polynomial plus a proper rational function,

P(x)Q(x)=p(x)+R(x)Q(x),\frac{P(x)}{Q(x)}=p(x)+\frac{R(x)}{Q(x)},

with R(x)Q(x)\frac{R(x)}{Q(x)} proper.

The polynomial pp integrates termwise. Only the proper remainder needs a further decomposition.
