Mass density of a lamina

A mass density ρ(x,y)\rho(x,y) assigns mass per unit area to a lamina occupying a region Ω\Omega. For a physical lamina, ρ≥0\rho\ge0 and ρ\rho is integrable. The total mass is

M=∬Ωρ(x,y) dA.M=\iint_\Omega\rho(x,y)\,dA.

When ρ=1\rho=1, the mass is the area of Ω\Omega.
