Subspace

Let VV be a vector space over FF. A subset S⊆VS\subseteq V is a subspace of VV when it is a vector space over the same field FF and uses the addition and scalar multiplication inherited from VV. A proper subspace is a subspace that is not equal to VV.

Two elements of SS are added as they are in VV and scalar multiplication uses the same scalars. The sets {0}\{0\} and VV are always subspaces of VV. When m≤nm\leq n, the standard embedding

(x1,…,xm)⟼(x1,…,xm,0,…,0⏟n−m)(x_1,\ldots,x_m)\longmapsto(x_1,\ldots,x_m,\underbrace{0,\ldots,0}_{n-m})

identifies Rm\mathbb R^m with the coordinate subspace {(x1,…,xm,0,…,0)}⊆Rn\{(x_1,\ldots,x_m,0,\ldots,0)\}\subseteq\mathbb R^n. For n≥2n\ge2, a plane through the origin in Rn\mathbb R^n is another example.
