Closure under linear combinations

Every linear combination of a finite set of vectors in a vector space VV is an element of VV.

The span is a subspace

If SS is a subset of a vector space VV, then span⁡(S)\operatorname{span}(S) is a subspace of VV. It is the smallest subspace of VV that contains SS.
