Proofs from Spectral applications

All proofs from Spectral applications.

Let g=dim⁡Eλg=\dim E_\lambda and begin a basis of the whole space with a basis of EλE_\lambda. In these coordinates, the first gg columns of AA have λIg\lambda I_g in their first gg entries and zeros below. Thus A−tIA-tI is block upper triangular, with λ−t\lambda-t on each of those gg diagonal positions. Its determinant has the factor (λ−t)g(\lambda-t)^g, so the algebraic multiplicity is at least gg.

For k=0k=0, both sides equal II. If the formula holds for kk, then

Dk+1=DkD=diag⁡(λ1kλ1,…,λmkλm)=diag⁡(λ1k+1,…,λmk+1).D^{k+1}=D^kD =\operatorname{diag}(\lambda_1^k\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_m^k\lambda_m) =\operatorname{diag}(\lambda_1^{k+1},\ldots,\lambda_m^{k+1}).

Induction proves the result.

For k=0k=0, both sides are II. If Ak=PDkP−1A^k=PD^kP^{-1}, then

Ak+1=AkA=PDkP−1PDP−1=PDk+1P−1.A^{k+1} =A^kA =PD^kP^{-1}PDP^{-1} =PD^{k+1}P^{-1}.
