Compute a matrix power by diagonalisation

To compute Akx0A^k x_0 for a non-negative integer kk when AA is diagonalisable:

  1. choose an eigenbasis and form PP from its eigenvectors;
  2. form the diagonal matrix DD from the corresponding eigenvalues;
  3. write A=PDP−1A=PDP^{-1};
  4. replace AkA^k by PDkP−1PD^kP^{-1}, so the powers are taken only on the diagonal;
  5. apply the result to x0x_0.

Equivalently, if x0=c1v1+⋯+cnvnx_0=c_1v_1+\cdots+c_nv_n in the eigenbasis, then

Akx0=c1λ1kv1+⋯+cnλnkvn.A^kx_0 =c_1\lambda_1^kv_1+\cdots+c_n\lambda_n^kv_n.

This form shows each mode evolving on its own.
