The eigenvalue one

Every transition matrix has 11 as an eigenvalue.

A sufficient condition for long-term Markov behaviour

Suppose that a transition matrix AA satisfies:

  1. 11 is an eigenvalue with algebraic multiplicity 11;
  2. every other eigenvalue λj\lambda_j has ∣λj∣<1|\lambda_j|<1;
  3. there is a basis of eigenvectors for Rn\mathbb R^n.

Then x(k+1)=Ax(k)\mathbf{x}(k+1)=A\mathbf{x}(k) has a limit p\mathbf{p} in the eigenspace for λ=1\lambda=1. It is the unique vector in that eigenspace whose component sum equals the component sum of x(0)\mathbf{x}(0); it may be zero when that sum is zero. If x(0)\mathbf{x}(0) is a probability vector, then p\mathbf{p} is the stationary distribution and does not depend on the initial probabilities.
