Linear combinations of solutions

If x1(t)\mathbf{x}_1(t) and x2(t)\mathbf{x}_2(t) solve x′=Ax\mathbf{x}'=A\mathbf{x}, then every linear combination

αx1(t)+βx2(t)\alpha\mathbf{x}_1(t)+\beta\mathbf{x}_2(t)

also solves the system.

Differentiation and multiplication by AA are both linear:

ddt(αx1+βx2)=αAx1+βAx2=A(αx1+βx2).\frac{d}{dt}(\alpha\mathbf{x}_1+\beta\mathbf{x}_2) =\alpha A\mathbf{x}_1+\beta A\mathbf{x}_2 =A(\alpha\mathbf{x}_1+\beta\mathbf{x}_2).
